Spring Plant Ordering Policy Click to view FULL POLICY It is best to prune back the branch or the entire shoot to allow new growth to regenerate in its place. Heading back pruning does not work well with these DSC since it may remove most of the buds located near the ends of the branches. After a couple of seasons of fruiting, buds will become clustered towards the ends of the branches leaving most of the branch bare/naked of leaves. Fruit spurs generally live for a couple of seasons and die. These cherries should be regeneratively pruned by removing some of the oldest shoots to the ground every year to allow new shoots to take their place.ĭSC buds are typically either vegetative (shoots) or reproductive (flowers/fruits), but never both. It is important to never remove more than 25% of the total wood during a single season as it will reduce flowering and yields. Damaged or diseased wood can be removed at any time during the season. The majority of pruning should occur in early spring before the buds break dormancy, usually March-April. Young plants may be planted horizontally below the surface to induce more suckering. Planting at least 1-3″ deeper than the pot is recommended to increase root development. For hedgerow plantings, 3′-5′ between plants and 12′-18′ between rows.
For individual plants, plant at least 5′ apart in the landscape. Dwarf sour cherries (DSC) are bushes, not trees! They can be easily maintained as individual shrubs or as a hedgerow planting.
